The largemouth bass is the most targeted and available bass species in North America. Less popular are the smallmouth, who live in cool waters mostly in the north, and the spotted bass, who live in rivers and reservoirs mainly in the south. While each species is different, they all fight hard and feature aggressive feeding habits that anglers can trigger using a variety of lures and rigs.

Bass can be patterned, but their mood, habits, and appetite constantly change, which keeps anglers on their toes, trying to figure out how and where to catch their next fish. By understanding where bass roam and the food they're feeding on, anglers can select lures that work in the areas they are fishing and resemble the forage that the bass naturally feed on.

Start with a medium-powered fishing rod spooled with 8-15lb fluorocarbon or monofilament fishing line. If you prefer braid, use 30-40lb braid for casting rods and 10-20lb braid for spinning rods.

Selecting a few simple baits that resemble things like crawfish, baitfish, and frogs is enough to get you started, and then continue to build your arsenal from there.

  • Crankbait (shallow in the spring and summer, deeper in the fall & winter)
  • Spinnerbait or Bladed Jig (baitfish colors, chartreuse, red)
  • Ned Rig (catches fish everywhere)
  • ⅜ oz Bass Jig (black & blue, craw, green pumpkin)
  • Topwater (frog, popper, buzzbait, spook)

Every Mystery Tackle Bass Box features an expertly curated assortment of bass fishing lures and tackle. Mystery Tackle Box helps you stock your tackle box with everything you need to catch more fish and educational content to help you along the way.

BASS FISHING

MUST HAVES

Pliers

A pair of fishing pliers will cut down the time it takes to free a hook from deep in a fish's mouth, or the carpet from your car's trunk (it's much safer too).

Cutting Tools

A good pair of scissors, a pocket knife, or even a set of nail clippers are great tools to help snip fishing line. Anglers interested in legally keeping their catch should invest in a fillet knife.

Fishing Net

A fishing net will greatly increase your chance of landing fish, allowing you to scoop them faster and easier than other landing methods.

Measuring System

A miniature measuring tape stored in your tackle box is an easy way to ensure you can measure your catch. Bass anglers often prefer their measuring weight, so a digital scale is also very useful.

HOW TO CATCH A BASS

There are endless ways to catch bass, but two simple and effective approaches are:

"give them what they want" or "force them to eat"

GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT

Bass are predators on the hunt for creatures like crawfish, baitfish, bugs, and frogs. In the spring, they might want a crankbait banged against the rocks because it looks like the crawfish they're eating. But in the fall, they might be interested in open water baitfish, which means anglers would be better suited throwing spinnerbaits or swimbaits that look more like minnows. Once you figure out what the bass are eating, use baits that resemble those things and then fish those baits in the areas you suspect bass are feeding.

FORCE THEM TO EAT

When you put a bait right in a fish's face, it forces the fight or flight response which to a bass causes them to either strike aggressively with their mouth or let the bait pass on by. By working baits quickly or using lures with intense movements, anglers can cover water quickly and force certain predator fish to choose between striking their lure or letting it pass. In theory, some bass will be forced to eat and attack the lure with aggression and fury, regardless of its unnatural movements.

WHY BASS ANGLERS LOVE MTB

My favorite part of checking the mail

I have been subscribed to MTB for over a year now and have loved every box I have received. I enjoy the introduction to lures I would never ordinarily fish with or even purchase!

VERY HAPPY NEW FISHERMAN!

As a new fisherman, I can’t imagine getting a better “bang for my buck”. MTB not only helped grow my tackle box in just a few months, but has exposed me to different types of tackle and rigs I never would have known about.

I recommend subscribing to MTBs for anyone who has a special fisherman in their life, whether it be a grandpa, mom, son, sister or significant other, and wants to spoil that special someone by caring and showing support for them in their sport
