TROUT FISHING REGULATIONS

Trout fishing regulations vary from state to state and even lake to lake so it’s important to know local regulations before hitting the water. Trout are routinely stocked for anglers to catch in parks and ponds, and they live wildly in streams, rivers and lakes with cool water.

Every Mystery Tackle Trout Box gets anglers the spinning gear they need to target brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Stock up on spinners, jigs, plastics, and rigs at a fraction of the price and start crushing more trout.

HOW DO YOU FISH FOR TROUT?

You can catch a species like brown trout in tiny streams in the great lakes and waters that different tactics must change. However, conventional anglers fishing from shore or a small boat typically fish with a few classics.

Using moving baits to mimic insects, worms, fish, egg sacks, and even mice, anglers fool visually eating trout into thinking they've scored a free meal. Sometimes, trout are willing to take fast-moving spinners or swimbaits, but other times you'll need to offer smaller meals with precision or finesse.

Since trout are swim in swift moving streams and rivers, fly fishing is another popular presentation for trout anglers. The ability to cast lightweight flies in swift, shallow water can be the most effective way to catch a trout in many situations.

WHERE DO YOU FISH FOR TROUT?

Stocked trout live in ponds, parks, and other places supported by your local state agency. Stocking information is available online and it's the first place to go when looking for a local trout spot.

Wild or native trout are found in clean, fast-moving water like creeks, rivers, and streams with the current. This is where you'll find stocked rainbows and browns thriving in the slack water, eddies, and deep pools of water.

Native trout like brooks and cutthroat's out west will be found in similar places, clean flowing water. Catching native fish often surrounds you in some of natures prettiest and most untouched areas.

Grab a Mystery Tackle Box and start exploring the trout waters you need.

The best bait & lures for trout fishing

Inline Spinners

This sinking lure an inline spinning blade needs to be retrieved from the second it hits the water until it reaches 6-12 inches from your rod tip. Then, cast it out and do it again.

Jigs

Small lead head jigs tipped with live bait or plastic minnows, worms, or grubs will take trout nearly anywhere they swim. Jig them off the bottom, use a smooth and steady retrieve, or attach a float to fish them near the surface.

Spoons

The slender wobble of a sinking spoon will a trout in anywhere from a tiny stream to the great lakes. Adjust your spoon size and weight based on the depth and current you're fishing. Start with gold and silver-colored spoons and build from there.

Whats the best fishing rod/reel for trout fishing?

Light to Medium-Light powered fishing rods with a moderate tip will work for nearly all your trout fishing rigs and lures. Longer rods cast further, make better drifts and help absorb the fighting fish through their bendiness throughout the battle.

Shorter rods are easier to cast in tight quarters, more manageable, and popular among casual trout anglers.

What size hook do trout like?

The smaller, the better. Using little Aberdeen, octopus, circle, and treble hooks will increase your chances of catching trout. Even big trout will often be more likely to eat a little bit rigged on a small, sharp hook.

TROUT SPECIFICS

WHAT'S THE BEST MONTH FOR TROUT FISHING?

The best month for trout fishing depends on where you live. In the Spring, trout ponds are stocked, and wild fish are biting in the rivers. This continues into early Summer as bug hatches pop up and fish begin feeding frenzies. Wade fishing for trout remains popular throughout the Summer months and continues into the fall when species like brook trout begin their spawning season.

LAKE FISHING OR RIVER FISHING?

A river trout's life revolves around current, and you’ll need to read the water current to understand better where to find your fish. They’re going to sit just outside the current seam, along a backwater current Eddie, or near a turn in the river where the current etched out a spot for them to sit. It’s about current, learn the current, and you’ll find the fish.

Trout living in lakes are generally going to roam constantly in whichever place they can routinely find comfort and food. You'll often find them suspended in the water column feeding on baitfish. Or you can try fishing near the bottom in the hopes of locating a trout rummaging through floor looking for a meal.

WHAT DEPTH DO TROUT FEED AT

Trout are roamers and constantly feed and swim at different levels of the water column. When bugs are just hatching at the surface, trout might be eating on top. But later in the year, it’s more likely to find them suspended in the water feeding in minnows. Trout will feed in depths ranging from 1-200 feet depending on where they live and what the food is doing.

Why TROUT Anglers love Mystery Tackle Box

I’m very pleased with the service, it’s a fun deal

So far I have received two boxes, both arrived on time and were well packed. I chose the Panfish & Trout option and look forward to using the baits this spring. I plan to try others in the coming months.

Top notch baits

and service

So far all of the shipments have been right on time and the baits chosen have been absolutely killer on every body of water I’ve touched. I signed up for the Panfish & Trout box and so far have been catching more and bigger fish than I have in the past, not to mention more species! Every bait they have sent has caught fish. I couldn’t be happier. For someone who doesn't like dealing with lines at the store, traffic on the way to get there, and trying to eyeball what may or may not work on the shelf, MTB has made the stress relief of fishing even greater.

Old dog,

new tricks

My father has been trout fishing for as long as he’s been able to hold a rod. I signed him up for this as a father’s day gift and it changed his fishing perspective completely. The man was once a two trick pony: drifting worms or minnows. Now he looks forward to what’s in the box every month for jigs, spinners, little stick baits, and all sorts of artificials he never tried. If you love to fish, and fish a lot, these boxes will spice up any day on the creek.
